Tips to Improve Your Relationship with Yourself

Your life partner whom you can never run away from is not your spouse, your child, your parent or your friend. It’s yourself. If this is a reality, which you and I both know it is, then why not to have a better relationship with yourself?

Because, as you deepen your relationship with yourself, your self-love grows. And accordingly, the quality of your life improves. As simple as that.

Disliking yourself, feeling shame, guilt, blame towards yourself, is not different from harbouring those same feelings for someone else. The difference is; you can walk away from someone you don’t like, but you cannot walk away from yourself. Therefore, reaching out to your inner child and addressing the diminishing feelings it is surrounded with might be the right path to take for a happier life.

Meditation, Journaling, Physical Movement

These are the three important things that you can practice to help yourself. They target every element of your system: Meditation; spiritual side of you, your consciousness, letting go of the ego and the physical reality. Journaling: emotional check-in with yourself. Physical Movement: body, health, immune system. You are never only one of these elements. You are all of them at the same time.

The ones who read my blog regularly know how big a fan of meditation I am. And that I have devoted quite a few posts on the subject in the past. And when it comes to physical movement, no need to remind anyone how important it is to keep a fit and healthy body. But what about journaling? Why is it one of the three important activities you can practice to help yourself?

Here is why

  • Journaling strengthens the connection between you and your inner child, accordingly, you get to know yourself better.
  • By writing about your emotions, experiences and thoughts, you allow yourself to express them freely, and by doing that you lower your stress level.
  • Regular journaling – at least three times a week – helps you effectively organize your thoughts, which in return improves your creativity and problem-solving abilities.
  • Communicating with yourself by journaling also helps with bettering your communication skills with others.
  • Journaling positively affects your sleep quality, mental clarity and feelings of anxiety and depression.
  • It improves your mood, shapes your thoughts, strengthens your willpower in developing a habit and sticking to it.
  • And maybe most importantly, it helps you to realize the abundance of wonderful things you have in your life that you should be grateful for.

If you are intrigued and want to give it a try, take a look at Stephanie A. Sarkis Ph.D.’s article on Psychology Today to learn about the best journaling techniques. Get a good quality notebook and a nice pen. Set aside 10 minutes and write away.

I believe, with the extra time that you have in your hands because of the COVID-19 quarantine these days, the timing is perfect to give it a chance. Because, why not, right?
